How To Take Care of Curly Hair

A short list of things I have learned about taking care of curly hair over the years:

  • Get a haircut, preferably a good one. Most curly hair has a tendency towards frizzing. Split ends make your hair frizzy. Ergo, keeping your hair healthy and your split ends under control means less frizz and more curl.
  • Layers are your friend. Not just in the summertime when all that hair holds in extra heat, either. The layers mean less volume, and always leave my hair looking extra curly, even on frizz-prone days.
  • Don’t wash your hair. Seriously. The extra oil in my hair is good for it; it’s less dry and keeps it healthier. I do use conditioner daily. (Truthfully, I wash my hair once or twice a week, depending on how dirty and sweaty it’s gotten.)
  • Use a good leave-in conditioner. I like Bumble and Bumble, but there are other good ones out there.
  • Twirl your hair around your fingers to make curls, don’t scrunch it up in your fists. The former encourages your locks of hair to work together while the latter encourages it to go in all kinds of random directions.
  • Accept that it’s never going to look perfect. And that’s OK.
